Are my guitar string to far from the frets?

I received a used Applause AE128 as a gift. This is my first guitar and it is really hard to play chords since i need to push the strings really hard and it is also painful. Is this normal and is there any way to make the strings softer? i tried other guitars and they are very easy to play.
